Olympics essay prompts

1. Which invention in the last 100 years has been most useful or important to most people, or to you? Why? (100-120 words)

2. You strongly disagree with letting children sit in front of the TV all day. Write an article justifying your opinion in no more than 100 words.

3. Write a postcard to your penfriend, Sam, about Ulaanbaatar. He wants to know how big UB is, what's the nicest part of the city, and what people do in the evenings. Write at least 80 words.

4. Write a story called "My Lucky Day". (100 or more words)

5. Some people prefer to spend their time outdoors. Others prefer to be indoors. What is your preference for your recreational time? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.  (11th grade question--40 min, at least 200 words) (This is similar to SAT or TOEFL essay prompts.)

6. Write a composition of 90 - 100 words entitled "The effects of mobile phones on our lives". (9th and 11th grade question)

7.  Variation of question # 6: Your class recently discussed the topic of mobile phones and how they make life easier. Now write an essay expressing your opinion on the subject. Use this plan to help you write an essay of 10 sentences and up to 100 words. (very specific...!! I don't necessary like this format but it's a sample question so be ready!)

Intro/Para 1: presentation of topic
Main Body: Para 2--good points
examples: Para 3--good points and examples
                Para 4--bad points and examples
Conclusion: Para 5--conclusion and your opinion

8. To be successful in educationi it is more important to be a good student than to have a good teacher. Do you agree or disagree? Support your answer with examples.

9. Last week you organized a surprise party for a classmate. Write a letter to your penfriend describing what kind of party it was, who came, and how it went. 120-180 words. Use appropriate style for a letter to a friend (but don't write an address, etc.).

10. Some people believe humans should not eat meat. Do you agree or disagree? 180-200 words.

Last day of school during the pandemic...

Well, this year has been unusual, to say the least. I haven't blogged in a year but on my way to my other blog, couldn't let this day go by without at least a few words. My students have done an AMAZING job putting together their evidence for the Cambridge exams that didn't happen. (Instead of exams, teachers are giving predicted grades which carry much more weight than usual, based on student performance on various tasks and practice papers. Then Cambridge will do some kind of check, do some audits, look at the global responses and make some final decisions.) I am really, really proud of them. So today, even though my work isn't finished, I'm taking a little break and hoping to play a game with my kids. And then, keep working on predicting their grades as accurately and fairly as possible. Cambridge did say that schools should predict how students would have done had we had a normal school year! Here's to hoping we'll have school at school in Septe...

Reading Nowadays, I like hotels, at any rate in small doses. But I wasn’t always so relaxed. For years, hotels and restaurants were for me theaters of humiliation. When I was little my parents didn’t have much money, and when we went into cafes the drill was for my Mum (or Dad) to order a pot of tea for two, and maybe a token cake, and my brother and me would be given sips of tea from their cups. While under the table my mother unwrapped a parcel of bread and butter that she’d brought from home, and she smuggled pieces to my brother and me, which we had to eat while the waitress wasn’t looking. The fear of discovery, exposure, and ignominious expulsion stayed with me well into my twenties, and memories of that and similar embarrassments come back whenever I stay in a hotel. I always carry my bags myself – it avoids the tip. It’s not the money. All you need to start them are a few things to supply the wildlife with, such like shelter, water and food. THis can be achieved by choosing the proper trees and shrubs for your area that they will provide birds and mammals with both food and shelter. Many birds and animals also depend on flowers for nectar, so be sure to have a wide variety of flowers. The type of plants you use will depend on the each type of wildlife in hour area nad what food sources they need. As for the water you will be need, digging small hole in the ground and filling it with water is sufficient for the most wildlife.
